They were definitely influenced by both SatAM and other OVA's from the era. That Final Fantasy OVA had very similar art.

I have a very specific problem with the OVA series (Sara) but yeah, the backgrounds and "set pieces" tell almost as much story as the plot itself.

I'd love to see a Sonic in a post apoc setting where parts of the world have healed/moved, with both anthros and humans trying to keep going.

Man at the time it took forever for this Sonic to come to the US, compared to what was available, I really prefered this over satam, this totally matches the wastelands / atmospheric environment of the games of the time.

I mean, Sonic is cool, but he's also a very cartoony character, and both can work very well together.

I love the environmentalism messaging going on in the background and the depth of it's history that's conveyed throughout the environment alone.

It even functions as a good explanation for the abstract terrain you'd see in the games.

favorite sonic anime(alongside the shorts.) & really wish the ova continued as i love the setting being my favorite in classic sonic(love little planet be retcon to it as i love the world of darkness continents:3)/enjoyed the characters feeling the endearingly cheesy fun loving tone of sonic.
