As you mentioned, Labour could easily make this happen right now. Given that they have had a lot of bad press lately, it does seem odd to miss out on this open goal. Maybe it’s fear of a Daily Mail article about poor peat diggers forced into penury by a peat ban and VAT on private school fees.

2) if the Government doesn’t push through the already approved and completely supported legislation, companies can still import and sell peat based plants, totally screwing over the thousands of businesses working hard to change their businesses voluntarily to peat free

3) protecting peat is in the Labour manifesto, the legislation is approved and supported, it would be the easiest win for Labour for carbon, nature and future economy and yet it sits there not happening while horticulture is ignored and harmed - and peat is still dug from natural habitats.

4) the horticulture industry has climbed a mountain for decades to get the Government to approve a ban on peat compost. We got there, the ban is approved, companies across the UK have switched in preparation. And then @marycreagh.bsky.social has done nothing with it. I cannot understand it.

Stopping the badger cull and strengthening the hunting act were also in the Labour manifesto, no action on those issues either.

Almost as if they made it all up just to win votes.

We absolutely need legislation Jack. Although as of right now, there is not actually a public policy commitment with "approved" legislation - this is still a step we have yet to see the UK government take, and which would be a huge leap forward for ending peat use.
