People complained about cohost not having discoverability mechanisms like a global feed or algorithmic timeline. what Bluesky has taught me is that that would have become absolutely intolerable very quickly

i genuinely think people just forgot how to do social media without an algorithm forcing random people into their feed all the time. like, it blew my mind how foreign the idea of tagging had become to some people when tumblr and twitter have been doing it for a decade
bluesky would be a lot better if i could opt out of both "here are some feral democrats who only speak facebook memes" and "i have built a large distributed 'kick-me' sign distribution system" in lieu of moderation
yuuuuup, like...half the appeal of cohost was its lack of discoverability and visible metrics
people posted about what they wanted to post instead of what they thought would be good for "the algorithm" and it's the primary reason why so many of us felt so comfortable there just being ourselves
some degree of algorithm is good though. if someone on here decides to go on a retweet spree my entire timeline becomes their posts, and that could definitely use some algo based filtering

share culling isn't really what people mean when they talk about "The Algorithm." that's a qol thing, not a discoverability thing. it absolutely should've been an option on cohost tho
i want to believe there are options other than being completely invisible to everyone no matter how much and how effortful your posts - and becoming twitter
Peeps will complain about algorithms and being ragebaited but then are unable to follow people and then follow whatever interesting people they follow. Like it's not that hard it's SOCIAL media be social

the funneling random tweets to fill out empty timelines is a whole other thing
