I wonder what is the reason Japan? Perhaps people abandoning the countryside to live in the city? Much of the Irish vacant and derelict homes are in our urban environments.

We have that issue too with newer recent builds. Here the problems stems from land and property values soaring. These vacant homes are an asset increasing in value regardless of the fact that the buildings are allowed to decay. Leave them vacant, let them rot and knock them for a juicy profit.

I must admit it shocks me every time I visit Ireland, the number of derelict houses in towns. Why not Tax them? If folks don’t pay the tax then the house is repossessed and given to the local authority. Any Tax raised could be used to provide social housing. Also tax undeveloped land .

Really surprised us too when we moved here to Carlow there were derelict houses in the middle of town, like wtf.. I think renovation work just started on them now 6 years later.

About 35 years ago land and property values starting growing exponentially and our politicians wouldnt be the types to curtail a feeding frenzy..especially when many benefit personally. We are a victim of our cultural tendency to say "it'll be grand".

160,000 homes taxed at 2000€ a Year is 320million for social housing plus tax undeveloped land - give them three years to build stuff once out line planning permission or rezoning made. Then tax at same rate .

Very poor enforcement and a tendency on Irish people not to report such issues to local councils. There is also a lot of people who think that owning something means they have not any civic responsibility for their neighbours
