Frankly, the leadership of the right is against the idea of citizenship altogether. "Gold cards" for the wealthy and precarious work visas for everyone else are their ideal state of affairs.
Expecting civic participation (outside of donations) or any kind of public services? That's communism.

JD Vance’s bargain is that you owe the US everything and it owes you nothing, even if you reside here. He’s famously against citizenship — and in many cases, even residency! — for many recent arrivals. Just a straight up odious dude.

"Parents were naturalized, so you're not a citizen" and "grandparents were naturalized, so you're not a citizen" are nearly the same policy.
But who counts as "right" is an ever-shifting boundary. No one's faces are truly safe from the leopards.
Over time "the good ones" from those classes were given the impression that they could rise up. Even *that* made the second lowest class mad.
