Tbf he doesn't say it doesn't matter. His argument re: North Sea (which I don't know enough to judge) is that it won't effect consumption, but will bring in money to spend on green energy.

Eg if you do Heathrow etc, a major road building programme, North Sea drilling, then it's certainly legitimate to say hold on, how does this play against net carbon emissions?

Yeah it's legitimate, it's clearly the most contentious thing about the post as the comments illustrate. I just don't think it's fair to say he's ignorning net zero when he explicitly says he does think we should try to meet the target.

And if everyone globally comes to that conclusion? This is the problem, in an approaching net zero world it's not good enough to say "we can do it, we're only small". You have to think "what behaviours are compatible to collectively get to net zero?"

I concur with that but key is changing mindset and responsibility of middle classes whilst not making economic situation work. Carbon league tables work well in changing corporates. For public expect people to measure their carbon footprint, encourage solar panels, heat pump and electric cars.

And if only we had all challenged Nick Clegg (I regularly chastise myself) when he came out against nuclear in early years of coalition. We could have invested and got net zero for 2025-3030 at zero interest rates - a really bad mistake in hindsight

He’s overestimating what the North Sea probably brings in, Net Zero aside. These are very mature fields now.
