I suppose I have a fairly traditionally bourgeoisie view of the critic: as someone who has the skills to see what the artist is doing. A layperson with other concerns can't be supposed to dive deeply into the art work; but the critic can help unlock it for more people.

This person is clearly misinformed. Like they have an inkling of an understanding but are misinterpreting ideas. But like industry makes these roles confused on purpose. Like they want people not to trust critics or journalists as much as they want both to just regurgitate press releases.

This was on the syllabus and imo is a must read for why criticism is necessary, specifically criticism that comes from a place of knowledge and love for the subject matter. But why that love is absolutely not the same as modern fandom. https://www.jstor.org/stable/20709102

This take is driving me nuts. A ridiculous misunderstanding of what criticism is. Especially in a time of fan service and the brand loyalty of franchise watching. Currently, fans are the ones, thinking about their favorite stories as products
