the problem is that people don’t ever think “it could be me” and they are totally willing to persecute anyone who doesn’t align with their politics.

I despise Khalil’s policies. At times I think he might be a Russian asset. With that said, I would fight to my last bit of energy to protect his liberty. You cannot suspend human rights based on whether or not you like the specific human.
