Me over the last few yrs: I didn't grow up with turn based Jrpgs, I liked some tactics games like FFT or whatever. I loved FF9 though.

jrpg fandom is a lot like star wars fandom. They'll pick out their era of games and just make it the single most defining element of their personality, creative upbringing or taste.
They will never and refuse to accept the flaws of their favs. It is enshrined.
I don't mean trailblazers like, say, Super Mario Bros, but games like Halo that in the genre was kinda mid but lots of people played it first, and not the older FPS
