people constantly assume that big numbers = good artists (and like, as if it a rule. a 100% chance) because i swear some of the best artists i've seen out there are SMALL. criminally underrated. 1k here. 100. a few followers. you get the drill.

This, but also, it stings so much when people approach you on streams/comments and ask "why aren't you more popular?" or say something like, "I'm surprised you don't have nnK or nnnK followers". I feel like those who say that don't know they're rubbing salt in open wounds.
A lot of my favourite artists are very small, and honestly I love that. Of course I listen to the big guys too, but I really like to support small artists, especially those trying something new or completely different. There's a certain amount of experimentation you can do with a small fan base
Numbers are a PAIN. I struggle a lot with them and it affect my selfsteem as an artist from time to time, but then I see a lot of AWESOME artists out there with small numbers and I just get angry because they deserve MORE ;;
I’ve never reached 1k on any social media yet (when I was still doing them) I had an ongoing queue of $500+ commissions, while many big artists are offering themselves as art slaves for $30. Numbers help for reach, but they don’t matter in the end if all you have are bots and lurkers.
i’ve seen some amazing artists with small followings on social media and the vibe i got was they don’t care about having big numbers/theyre posting for fun and they put their efforts more into non-online endeavors! social media brings some craziness i think some ppl don’t want haha
I just made a post about how I think about doing something trendy or something that would gain attention, but it’s never even guaranteed if I do. I think that’s kinda on topic, no matter how good you may be, online recognition is just luck of the draw anyway
to clarify, i'm not saying that big artists can't be good cuz that's simply not true. just that people who think it's *always* the case, that big numbers are *synonymous* to good - are wrong.
the internet is unfair and i've seen some of the most incredible talents with 40 followers to their name.
Numbers are a show of nothing but the ability to talk. Sometimes the best artists are those who lack that skill, or haven't had a chance to improve with it - but the art they make is EXTREMELY SKILLED.
public speaking/media marketing is a skill unto itself!!!
Ah I’m so sorry about that response I made. I just have a really hard time believeing in myself because I fear someone will try to knock me down a peg. Plus, I’m just so tired of my art not getting noticed.
I ask this because each of these goals are valid, in their own way, but will lead you towards dramatically different paths with your art and how you post it.
And...you deserve to fully understand yourself and what you want/need from the art you make and then share.
fwiw - having good communication skills isn't the be-all end-all of posting online! There's no one-way to do it.
We're hitting a point where options for the ways you post/communicate are less limited...so the potential to succeed, even in small ways, is there more than it has been in a while ^^
This is where my autism frustrates me because i try to engage how i think people would enjoy and then i go ‘oh wait this might be annoying’ 😭 i’m learning though!
that's a really good point! i'd definitely say that twitter in the recent years was merely a matter of luck, as there came a point where NOTHING you'd do, would work. unless you paid for that scam, or was farming rage baits.
and i agree. i've known some of the most vile ppl in my life, and they -
i mean, surely. but my point really is that social media are unfair and sometimes even the most skilled artists end up with like 40 followers to their name. 2-4 likes etc.
and i'm pretty active atm. opened my inbox and ur reply was on top.
To this point, I will say it was a nice little confidence boost to have a person look at my art in a discord I'm in, go to my twitter and shout at me "HOW DO YOU ONLY HAVE 300 FOLLOWERS!?" 😂
Actually because I am sub-50 followers I am legally obligated to be a garbage artist, if I get more follows then I am allowed to be a better one that's how this works /j
One of my favorite artists has never broken into 1k numbers despite the fact I think they create some of the most beautiful pieces of art ive seen. It really is is the luck of the draw when it comes down to it.
Honestly! Popularity is all luck. The same goes for writers, some of the most popular writers on Earth are exceedingly mediocre and the only reason they got to where they are is because they happened to be in the right place at the right time, got noticed by the right person and got an opportunity.
bueno es cosa de perspectiva, hay gente que simplemente dibuja cosas que le gustan a todo el mundo, pero buscando bien es que encuentras lo realmente bueno💕💕🍒

Cahaba ruins. Doesn’t have a ton of music but Has a few really good tracks (area 83 in particular) dude barely breaks 100 monthly listens on Spotify. Has a new ep out rn if ya wanna check it out
This is something that frustrates me greatly bc in a better world, great artists would get lots of followers, but somehow they don't for whatever reason so that's why I made a starter pack to help
Being a good artist doesn't magically mean someone knows how to market themselves and I wish more people understood that.
That and algorithms are unkind as shit to artists
i have some of the coolest artist friends EVER on disc but then i check their socials and its like HOLYSHIT i need to blast your art into the eyes of 1 bajillion people
I think a big part of the problem is that a lot of the best artists take a lot of time on each piece so they can't/don't post as often: which algorithms don't like.
I agree so heavily because I will continuously just go absolutely feral for so much art and I am always suprised when I see some phenomenal art and then the artist has like 3 people following them.
I just want to scream LOOK OVER HERE, THIS IS COOL!!

Sometimes bad people get large numbers of followers, too. And it's bc they're able to articulate themselves in a way that is ~relatable~ to people.
public speaking/media marketing is a skill unto itself!!!
Why do you want to grow an audience?
Is it because you want financial success/you need to support yourself with your art?
Or is it because you want validation or praise, admiration?
Or is it because you want to feel like part of a community?
And...you deserve to fully understand yourself and what you want/need from the art you make and then share.
That's what I'm here for >:) sometimes u just need a lil hypeman to boost your stuff or encourage you, ya know???
fwiw I also think there's a lot of people who just. Enjoy watching people ramble about/do their own thing???

sucks though if you put all your skill points into art and none into charisma (like me 🫠)
