This day as a tradition, though, is steeped in laughter, love, sustenance, family, and the gratitude birthed by generations sharing joy around the table and squabbling for the last piece of peach or pumpkin or sweet potato pie. #familyday

It is a day that, in my homes and households, been called Family Day because that is what we are saying grace and giving thanks for. This legacy of celebration is just one of the ways being American means wearing golden handcuffs and reveling in being chained while marveling at how shiny they are.
Being Black/Chicano in these United States on this federally-declared celebration, sent home to give & get loving embraces knowing this time away from capitalist participation rests among broken & bloodied bodies of people gleefully robbed of their land & lives means four things are true at once:
I am thankful and grateful for the family that surrounds me; I am conscious of the price still to be paid for my respite; I am angered that people tout America's "greatness" when its laurels rest on violence that is yet to be curbed; #thanksgiving #familyday
and I kneel while the national anthem is played as propaganda around sporting events, so too is the surface thin on which I walk this trail of giving thanks today. #thanksgiving #familyday
But alas - I do give thanks for my family, and my friends, and peach pie. “…with mirth in funeral and with dirge in marriage/ in equal scale weighing delight and dole…”

Just as I struggle to embrace the nationalistic jingoism surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
Happy Family Day.
