Duplication of bureaucracy will add to the cost. What will local councils do differently? There is a facility with the current setup for local communities to have local decision making, but the public have not taken them up.

I know you're all about "smaller local democracy" but a lot has changed in 30 years - not least the ability of the internet to shrink how close we feel. What does "local" really mean now - or what could it mean - from a modernist perspective?

HC constituency is too big & too diverse with many conflicts of interest affecting the councils priority & focus. Most of the population live urban on the east coast. For the rest, in an area closer in size to a small country, many feel remote from decision making & under represented. Change needed.

Indeed - all Scotland's Councils are too big on their own. But at least we're discussing how to make democracy more local - whilst Labour does the opposite in England. And I'm sure if Labour gets control in 2026, they'll do the same here. To Starmer and McSweeney, Scotland is just another region.

I am gobsmacked 😲. In the months before the amalgamation of the councils the soon to be Highland Council ran a hugely biased questionnaire. People went round the houses with the survey and filled it in on the doorstep. The questions were so biased it was impossible to not give them the ... 1/2

... answer they wanted. The Highland Council was imposed on Highland residents, and the ex Regional Council (who saw themselves as the greatest beneficiaries) were full square behind it.

Sorry, for ranting like this, but... At the time some of the local district councils (DC) were way ahead of the Regional Council in every possible metric and, would have done a far better job. History has its models in the DC network. It's about time we returned to proper local democracy.
