No discipline involved at all! LOL. I have a fiancee who loves to use my chest as a pillow and take lots of naps, so this works out well for the both of us. My job is to lay still, be warm, and hold her close - all things I can do while reading!

I know I don't read the "usual" bestsellers. My stuff is pretty niche, but if you want to know about wars in Africa, flying bananas, the Foreign Legion in the 1800s, Marine Recon, Convoys, or Tanks in Vietnam, or being a firefighter during the troubles & so much more these were all excellent!

I've never kept track of how many books I've read in a year before. It'd be a lot. If I get on a good binge I can plow through a book or two a day. But it's also balanced out by giant fantasies that take a long time. I'm so curious now!

Curiosity is what got me to start tracking how many books and the pricing! I read a lot of used books and books I download from the library and I was curious, if I had bought them new, how much would I have spent? When I realized that many of the books were $40+ each... it was a thing!

So I have been an avid reader since I was little. Whenever I have down time, out comes the book! Sitting at the beach, at the lake, being trapped by the fiancee because she wants to lay on my chest and take a nap or go to bed... out comes the book.

synergistic overview stuff as well. A lot of times I'll go on a theme, like when I read a handful of books by those who were a member of the same LRRP outfit, or Raven FACs or really old memoirs of those who served in Tonkin with the Foreign Legion in the 1800s....

What I will say that has helped the most is that CA has rules that if you live in the state, you can get library cards from any CA library which grants access to ebooks beyond my small library. That way I usually only buy books I know I like and want to keep, but don't feel put out buying bad books.

Same. I feel a sense of anxiety if I don't have a book waiting in the wings as soon as I've turned the last page of my current one. And as someone who doesn't own a Kindle or equivalent, it has to be an actual book. 😁

With ebooks, I find myself reading mostly on my phone w/ various apps (Kobo, Bookfunnel, GooglePlay, Kindle) commuting, traveling, or any time I have to wait. Will not buy a new Kindle.

Deciding which is next is an OOF! It's hard, it's mood dependent, it's also topic dependent. I might pick up a book on a topic and go "I need to read everything about this topic now!!!" Or there are times when I just need a change of pace and decide "That's it, time for something fiction now!"

I find it funny how much anxiety fiction books give me at times... does he die? Is he going to die? Are they going to get the bad guy? AHHHH! Whereas nonfiction tends to be a much calmer read so I have to mix them up for my own mental well being LOL!!!

There's nothing like reading when you're truly addicted to a book and can't put it down. I tend to read in spurts and I'm due for a fresh one. I know it's not about the numbers, but I would super impressed with myself if I'd read 61 books in a year.

I think that's the trick to reading is never push yourself, just read when you feel like it/want to. I'll go whole months and just not want to it happens :) And I won't lie, this year there's been some amazing books that I just did NOT want to stop no matter how tired I got!

That's awesome! And most is good! I have had 8 books that were meh/couldn't finish, which isn't a bad ratio really! I think I'm just really disappointed in 2 because the topic/titles seemed so interesting and exciting but the writing and contents were just atrocious. 🤷 It happens :)

My Kindle tells me I’ve read 188 books this year, mostly SF from kindle unlimited which has saved lots of money! I always have a couple of paper books on the go too and they are usually something educational: current is “the particle at the end of the universe”. Alternatively it’s books about beer!

If you like SF, you might want to try the late David Sherman's books. I've read his military fiction and have always loved his writing style and stories!

And kindle unlimited is a great place to find less popular/self published stuff! Throw in Libby/Overdrive/hoopla and I'm swimming in books!

I’ll have a look. Apart from saving me money KU has been useful for sampling authors. I can read a few chapters then just send it back if I’m not enjoying it. Mostly I’ve ended up downloading more! I’ve also ended up getting heavily into detective novels, something I’d never read before.

That's how I use Libby for my fiancee! If you'd like a good detective novel rec, I can't say enough about @jimmywriter.bsky.social's novels. I just finished #19 and while a couple have been clunkers, most are incredible! His characters actually breathe and aren't just cardboard cutouts / tropes.

Michael Pearce wrote "A Dead Man in..." series of books that were set before WW1 & it's equal parts history and detective case & I really enjoyed them for the insight into the world as it was, the different cultures, and the cases were really interesting.

Some other well known authors are Michael Connelly, W.E.B Griffin, and Leonard B. Scott. One other that I've tried to get into but personally think is overrated is Joseph Wambaugh, but others disagree :)
