At Harvey Mudd everybody is (was? I haven't kept up on curriculum changes) required to have about a third of their courseload be arts/humanities/social sciences.

I absolutely hate "fiction is a waste of time" stemlords but I also cannot abide the twin myths of "tech people somehow get degrees with no humanities education" and "humanities education is either necessary or sufficient to be a complete and ethical person" on the other side of the argument

I love art, I love literature, I love social sciences, I love the humanities, I think liberal education is a good thing (although I think how we do it is broken), but, I mean, Jordan fucking Peterson exists, and he's just a highly visible example of a terrible humanities guy

I tend to think of it as relational, but not causative. Like, smoking doesn't actually *cause* cancer, but people who smoke are more likely to get cancer. People who read are more likely to have a more holistic understanding of things. No guarantees, of course.

And, of course, there are many incredibly thoughtful people without a formal education in the humanities. Many dunces with a PhD in literature. And many decent people who don't read at all!

I didn't have a minor requirement (though I did CS, which was under the general arts and sciences school), but I did have a bunch of Gen Ed requirements. I still remember taking Intro to World Music (though very little of the world music).
