In a book about The Fall of the Solid South 1932-1968, they actually talk about how Southern democrats who virulently opposed integration were willing to allow FDR’s racial progressivism because of how dire their economic status was, so this tracks.

It honestly seemingly drives home the conclusion that people will abandon cultural divides if facing an existential threat. Normally, people will choose racism and bigotry over their own self-interest, but there’s a certain point of economic collapse where they switch. Hence how Obama won.

My guess is that it’s job loss that’s the clincher. My guess is that people who support Trump are fine suffering a little from his policies if they believe that people that threaten their status (non-white people, immigrants) will suffer more. But job loss flattens the playing field.
