The Commission has claimed stubbornly that “simplification” is not “deregulation” for months now, including during hearings in Parliament.

Well. Now they say simplification is about “a regulatory system based on trust and incentives” rather than “detailed control”. Honesty is good.

They are about to create a 4 tiered regulatory system: one for big companies, one for "midcaps" (not big, not SMEs), one for SMEs and one for "innovative companies" and startups.

A new regulatory regime for “innovative companies” so they can avoid “any relevant aspects of corporate law, insolvency, labour and tax law” at national level and enjoy less strict European rules.

Will be interesting and probably scary to follow. Sidestepping national tax rules or labour laws?

Corporate lobby groups are now all over the place in the strategy, including in planning with member states what to do nationally, outside the EU’s mandate.

There seems to be no end to what big companies should be involved in and co-decide.

The Commission now uses the term “review” of chemicals regulation. It’s not about protecting the environment or citizens, but to protect the competitiveness of the chemicals industry.

In sum, with the Competitiveness Compass, they show they have lost the other compasses: the moral, the democratic, the social and the environmental.

Lots of challenges to come! Surely, this will not go down easily.
