i clarify what i mean here! nationalism is like... a spiral of feedback "encouraging" itself. Eg, once upon a time we wanted to punch nazis. Now they're openly embraced. it sucks!!!

Oh american nationalism has existed long before the cold war. I apologize for not clarifying. It always has and it's always sucked. It's just it started to get even WORSE (noticably so) during that era. It's what led to nationalists today being as emboldened as they are (imo.)
