It is such deep garbage. I mean this goes beyond prejudice and transphobia (there is also clearly an anti-sex-work undertone, so prejudice is broader than transphobia). It is word salad, or rather word porridge. No logic, no understanding of causes and consequences. No structure. Just garbage

I second this. I used to be in the academic world and many of these people (not all) manifest extreme self-conceit and smugness. They are never wrong and cannot possibly be wrong, and any human concern they haven’t felt is to be dismissed as stupid person’s hyperbole.

It's almost like researchers like this treat trans and other gender nonconformance identities as curious hobbies, not actual identities that are crucial to the person's happiness.

Trans people don't go through all this strife, stigma, abuse from other aspects of society for shits n giggles...

I keep meeting the stance to this both academically and privately.
Being queer is seen by non-queers as an academic topic - not an existential one. Any voice about my or my friends lived experiences are met with indifference at best, questioning my sources(!?), and dismissing them.

There's an incredible amount of variability in people. So many different interests, lifestyles, forms of expression, cultures, etc. Not sure why other people get wigged out about these kinds of variances the human experience, unless they're taught to feel uncomfortable about it.

That sucks. As far as I can tell, I'm cishet but after getting over my religious upbringing it's been easy to be accepting. I don't understand why people can be dismissive or questioning about what other people tell them about their lives and experience.

Hey, just want to interject that if you are genderfluid, even if you aren’t exploring medical transition, you don’t need to identify as cis unless that really feels the right word for you. You don’t need to medically transition to be trans or nonbinary or genderqueer or whatever feels right to you.

The same goes for social transition: you don’t need to be out in every space in your life. You can be out on the internet and nowhere else and that doesn’t mean you have to ID as cis unless that’s the word you feel most comfortable with. Not everyone is ready/safe to be out everywhere and that’s ok.

Infuriating. I've known various trans women who've done sex work and its always been because transition is expensive and there is often little to no help available. To trivialize this kind of thing is revolting. These "researchers" need a good punch in the brain.

I think this may reveal a prior of the writer: that transitioning is just frivolous and unnecessary.

Some people refuse to believe that transitioning is necessary or even beneficial. It's like a fad or a diet to them.

the fundamental nature of their analysis here is that they seem to have randomly guessed whether various psychological/emotional factors are positive or negative for people, and then randomly guessed how that would affect behavior. you use more drugs when you're having fun! unless it's the opposite!
