That already puts you above the majority—who just flinch and pretend they didn’t hear anything and try to just detach from all discomfort.
if Im capable, if I can take care of myself, then that means I should do so
and that means doing all the things necessary to take care of myself
and putting that responsibility on myself scares me
Im working on overcoming that fear but its a deep one
What I cannot tolerate in propagandistic narratives about “inherent goodness of people” and “it’s fine to be dumb & weak, you can just Depend on stronger people to punch people for you, and on smarter people to tell you what to do,”
Their messaging sounds superficially Kind but they are (intentionally or unintentionally) pushing people into greater depths of suffering and misery.
They are thus made extremely vulnerable to manipulation, indoctrination, domination.
and others pretend to be sympathetic while they inwardly enjoy watching a vulnerable person suffer, because they get their sense of comfort and superiority from knowing someone is worse off than them.
that I personally found much stronger motivation to strive for responsibility and self-reliance once I fully recognized that the alternative was to make myself and my survival dependent on appeasing people like that.
