In 2014 I watched & reviewed the Violinist of Hameln TV anime, which (with the help of Yasuhiro Imagawa as the sole writer) reinterpreted Michiaki Watanabe's fantasy gag manga into a deadly serious dark opera with barely any animation at all to it... and it is simply outstanding.
