For all its faults (unrelated to the stellar writing), it's a genuinely compelling work for reasons like this one. I was paying too much attention to the colonialist and religious angles, so this somehow flew over my head, but yeah. Gio's on the money.

Probably forgetting some great works, but I think Avowed is the best piece of “pandemic art” we’ve gotten. So much stuff in the wake of Covid was just a snap reaction to isolation that stopped there, but this actually tackles how a crisis becomes a political bargaining chip.
