It wasn't until 2350 that they perfected the Transporter so that it worked as well as the ancient Star Trek stories. It was astonishing: it could beam you miles or light years away in just moments.
It didn't really beam _you_, of course. Too heavy to send all that matter, and unnecessary.

It copied the exact state of you: every particle, every proton and electron, and sent all that information through the aether. You were assembled, exactly as you were, out of matter present at the far end. Your thoughts, memories, everything was perfectly preserved. You feel
exactly the same.
This left of course the tiny problem of what to do with the original copy of you. We can't have two of you running around, now can we? Nobody wants that. The original must be discreetly disposed of. The original is politely escorted away, kept calm. I'm told they don't
feel a thing.
Each time you step onto a Transporter it's 50/50, really, which side you wake up on. I've been beamed twelve times so far. Twelve copies of me have been quietly led away. I try not to think about it.
This time I'm going to Alpha Centauri. I'm excited for the trip. I've heard
it's beautiful there. I step onto the Transporter pad, just like all the other times. The scanning beam tickles a bit. Funny. I don't remember the feel of it.
It's done. I look up, but all Transporter rooms look the same. The exit leads me to a peaceful room bathed in green light. Much nicer
than other aetherports I'd been to. Alpha Centarauri must be a good one. I sat down on the luxurious couch, enjoying its silky fabric. It had a strange smell, sweet, something like...
It wasn't until I head the music that I realized this was the end.
