I don't think fedora is good for a newbie. You have to install stuff like RPM fusion to get access to proprietary software repos, and media codecs aren't enabled by default (unless they fixed that).
Pop is also a good one. I started with that a couple of years ago!
i thought the fusion addition has been made much easier to work with off late... but it definitely falls down to the user's use cases, but yeah popOS and Mint are definitely a great place to start, and thanks to flatpak we've easy to install for a lot of new users.
I would love the administrators at my university pushing these "tools" to understand what a monumental FERPA violation they are if any of our students' data goes into training sets
