There are three Crocus species called "Snow Crocus" because they bloom starting in late winter. C. tommasinianus (purple/violet) is the earliest. C. chrysanthus (mostly yellow) is next and C. vernus (mostly violets) is next after that. C. tom is not that common. The next two are 1/2...

3/3...the yellow forms of C. chrysanthus to bloom first in most people's gardens. But then there's the fall and winter blooming species (almost all are violet/purple) of Crocus and the winter ones (at least in areas that aren't too cold) will bloom winter into spring, beating out C. chrysanthus.
