What the heck.. Why would the Mavs send their cornerstone, Luka to the Lakers?!?! They were so close last year!! Only a piece or 2 away. I’m flabbergasted… Also, screw the Lakers 😈 #nba #hater #haterade #nbanews #tradedeadline

I know that’s one reason, the other is conditioning. Regardless that doesn’t answer the question why the Lakers?? Other teams have younger/better assets and MORE picks to offer. AD and Luka was basically a 1:1 ratio equal trade which doesn’t make sense because they’re not.
No cause even Kidd was shocked about the trade. I don’t think he was happy. I lo key think Mavs are worried about his conditioning, and potential other problematic behavior. Plus they don’t want to commit to him long term and $$. More time w/ same problems. Cut him loose early. My new theory
Well, as it turns out, I am guilty, as is most of the world, at looking at this trade from the wrong direction. The Mavs initiated these talks not to trade Luka. Their goal was to acquire AD and Luka was the price they had to pay to complete that acquisition.
The Mavs had no intention of extending Luka with the super max. Luka is a great player, but no one thinks he's the best in the NBA and the Mavs didn't want to make him the highest paid player in the NBA. They also knew Luka would leave in free agency if he wasn't offered that.
If you’re an NBA GM, you dream about offering $70 million to a superstar 26-year-old (age when Luka signs it next year). That is what you hope—you draft somebody who turns to be a 1st team All-NBA guy for five straight years, comes up big in the playoffs and is The Guy. But Dallas traded him.
