The main issue is that when you don't use %nin% you don't get 'March of the pigs' playing in your head as you code

To me it looks quite confusing. Usually ! modifies the closest thing to it, so I would read this as “not validation in c(number, integer)” which is not correct and confusing. !(x %in% y) is clearer to me but more verbose.
