I genuinely don't understand what people have against the new shrek design. It looks completely fine to me?? Like obviously they would adjust it to fit the new style from puss in boots??

people need to start respecting artists again because why is so many people’s first reaction to bully the animators when something isn’t exactly like they expected
My problem with it is that it looks a little too cartoonish, too Disney, basically. The large eyes, softened features... it doesn't look as unique and I wish they kept that general harshness while improving the animation
Plus it does stray away from Puss's style a bit
This is the first normal take I read about the redesign. I was starting to feel like I was missing something that other people seemed to see (and totally freak out about)
I think what pisses me off the most is that people are like "let's bully them like we did with sonic". A whole studio SHUT DOWN because of the redesign.
And yeah, the redesign did ultimately safe the sonic movie franchise, but people still lost their jobs. Plus, compared to sonic, shrek looks completely fine? Artists and animators are already incredibly underpaid and overworked, stop making their lives even worse 🫠
I totally get that people cling to their nostalgia, but obviously, it wouldn't look the same as it did 20 years ago. Plus, Puss in Boots is a full-on masterpiece of storytelling and animation, and I'm pretty sure shrek 5 is gonna be good too 🙏
Nobody complained how they effectively yassified Puss in Last Wish and it wasn't a problem for them then. Like seriously the last Shrek movie was 15 years ago and the old animators moved on to other things
for me it's that they've been "disneyfied," for lack of a better term. most of mainstream western animation looks very same-y in style and this change leans into that when the previous movies' style had nothing wrong with it and was honestly refreshing in its nonconformance. this look works for--
the daughter, because she was designed within the framework of that big-eyes-round-face-hyper-cute style. but the other characters look wrong because there was a clear attempt to cute-ify them but still keep most of their design elements that were from a style that was not supposed to be cute.
the result is then of course going to give most people an uncanny kind of feeling. fiona especially is completely unrecognizable in her features.
there was no *need* to change the style so drastically, especially if the intent is to match the tone of the previous movies. i dont think it makes sense-
to match the puss in boots style, because this isn't a spin-off. it feels cheap and like some kind of attempt to make the visuals more palatable, which is always going to be a boring and disappointing choice.
What bothers me about the backlash is that Shrek was always meant to challenge conventional beauty, so the people saying he lost his charm or whatever are admitting to have missed the point and somehow proud of it. i think its cool that he sorta looks like he aged :D
I suspect a large percentage are ranting base purely on blurry article screenshots instead of looking at the actual trailer where they look SO GOOD and fluid and lively. It's a desperately needed update.
I saw someone mention it was the spacing of the eyes. While I can see it, it's still stupid to get so upset over them updating a design that's 25 years old. Like cmon people 🙄
I think it’s just that a few parts of it definitely need to be tweaked. The most notable being that the eyes are too close together. Obviously it’s not going to look like it did, and that shouldn’t be an expectation. A few tweaks and it’ll be fine.
i like the redesign! obviously updated to account for the new animation technology they have at disposal. my only gripe is that their distinct facial markings are a little too off for me to properly connect them with the original faces, but that's just an eye distance thing
I really didn't see a huge difference at first. After a few watches of the trailer, I agree. It still has its old design flare and charm, but just shined up a bit. I like it
they made him too smooth, round, and nonthreatening. it doesn't work on him because he's by his very nature supposed to be the opposite of that—jarring, unappealing, abrasive. it's bad character design because it detracts from the over all theme of him
