I recommend to anyone/everyone, the best, most important book(s) written from/about the Third Reich, I Will Bear Witness (in 2 volumes), by Victor Klemperer. He and his "Aryan" wife lived in Germany the whole time during Hitler's rise, thru/to war's end. 1st-hand what it was like to live in fascism. - ThreadSky

It is, though of a history-at-a-remove variety (the usual). Klemperer's is entirely personal/direct/eyewitness/participant. As I said to another Skyer here, I read it twice. It's by now a standard text, if you're going to familiarize yourself with the whole Nazi phenomenon. Regards.

You mean William Shirer's book, which I read twice. It is useful, a good book to have read--but not first-hand, on-the-spot, I-lived-through-this history, as Klemperer's was. Many other worthwhile books too, of course. I've read many of them. Regards.

I've read a lot about 3rd Reich, this is most important of all, day-by-day, sometimes hour-by-hour, direct, personal experience, "He said..." and so on. Amazing his notes survived, and the great risk he/they took in hiding them...we are all enriched by this gem of history.
