I'm reminded how society doesn't see students as human beings. It's true that we must do everything we can to protect them, we forget that our children have aspirations to agency, too.
Some of us like children to speak, but only when they sound like idealized versions of us.

I immediately move to get them to ask something else.
“Is my thought process complete in response to the question you asked me to think about?”
“What new learning did I reveal in my writing?”
Alas.
Another strategy she and I discussed was having the student compare their response to a mentor text. Have the student identify their own areas for improvement then share their discoveries.
