This feels a bit like hair-splitting to me. If someone unshakably believes in something that is demonstrably false, well that's pretty stupid.

Using this belief as evidence for their stupidity ("we know he's stood because he believes... etc") is fine.
However, "reasons people ... are stupid..." is about how the people got to be this way, not why what they believe is very wrong.

I do think that a combination of propaganda and innate confirmation bias can be a strong contributing factor to making people stupidly, stubbornly believe in things that are wrong.
