For completeness, I’ve typically defined NeuroAI as the discipline that uses ideas from neuroscience (architectural, representational, behavioral, dynamic, learning, etc.) to build AI that is “better” (more accurate, able to generalize, robust, data efficient, energy efficient, etc.)

I think my definition covers what you wrote but then goes beyond as a science of intelligence. But it is not a new aspiration as @tyrellturing.bsky.social has elsewhere described.

But Cognitive Science is an academic discipline, so I'd have to get a PhD and do actual research to become an expert in the field. If I call it NeuroAI I just need some LinkedIn posts and a TED Talk.

I disagree, cognitive science never had AI in focus and typically defined as a science of mental representations in brain. We are going much beyond here.

Psychology has come to dominate cognitive science, but AI was most definitely a core discipline at cogsci's founding. See Bechtel et al.'s history in A Companion to Cognitive Science. http://mechanism.ucsd.edu/research/companion.pdf

I’m no expert in the history of cog sci, but from listening to @tyrellturing.bsky.social, it sounds like there was an active disregard for neuro in the early days and an embracing of it later but at the expense of non-brain intelligence. So brain+machine bicuriousity hasn’t yet been realized

Cog Sci has many forms, but at least at UC San Diego the Cog Sci crowd was doing AI before AI was cool.
