theres something about writing consciously and understanding the contents versus just remembering it as shapes that lets him copy it almost perfectly rather than what he does when he tries to draft a memo (hes still better at maps though and portraits of major figures he sees in enemy camps)

of course they've got little slum brats taking the dangerous jobs, they're a dime a dozen and always in need of a few coins for their families (mu qing) or themselves (hong-er) and if they live through it there's at least a slight chance for them to be awarded something for their service

hong-er isn't doing this for the reward though, hes just here to serve the crown (aka xie lian) because he's a messed up child who xie lian saved from being trampled in a parade years before that started the whole war when yong'an trojan horsed them for not sending aid in a natural disaster

this is all so eventually hong-er can join the xianle trio much to feng xins disappointment (and bruised shins, he kicks and RUNS and hong-er is so FAST) and mu qings annoyance (and also lowkey glee that feng xin keeps getting kicked)
