There is a big difference between the go arounds at MDW: jet ignores/doesn't understand clearance & taxis onto active runway; & DCA: jet cleared to takeoff isn't moving fast enough. 1st is car runs stop, you slam on brakes; 2nd car ahead is slow you tap brakes. 1st = survival, 2nd = prudent driving.
Why does it take deaths before someone will fix this issue? (Not saying republican care about people dying). Please congress, restore funding and staff now.
“It's a tool in both the pilot's and air traffic controller's toolbox to help maintain safe and efficient flight operations…”. That’s FALSE. A go-around is highly INEFFICIENT in both fuel and time. And there is a huge difference between a pilot-caused go-around and a controller-caused one.
I blame local traffic cops. Can't be Trump's fault. Sure, he messed with air traffic controllers and all that, but they're called AIR TRAFFIC controllers for a reason. Issue on the runway are on the GROUND.
How frequent an event is this? It seems to be happening a lot lately but is it really an uptick? It doesn’t make me want to book any air travel but is this real or just an emotional response?
Who knows but the training program is long. The entrants of last 1-2 yrs were let go (as i understand it but hey🤷♀️)…. That leaves existing ATC already in short supply and AI support lagging. Even if the accident and close-call events are a normal % that still speaks volumes for improvement needed!
I am shocked, SHOCKED I say, that the Midway one involved a private jet. And yeah, 250ft? YIKES.
The other one... described by a passenger who was already nervous, it's super hard to say just yet eh
I'd bet a *lot* that the one at DCA was nothing more than the equivalent of slowing down in a car when the car ahead of you isn't moving as fast as you expected.
Not to say that it wouldn't be alarming for a nervous flyer. Especially when the last thing on the pilot's checklist is an announcement.
Anyone ever play that ATC game? It feels like that’s real life now. (I definitely cut it too close too many times and crashed planes crossing runways.)
Where’s Sean Duffy? He made an entire personality out of criticizing democratic leadership and now that he’s in charge he’s no where to be found and asleep at the wheel.
Sounds like constantly demeaning and harassing federal employee air traffic controllers and pressuring them to quit while threatening them with layoffs is going really great.
I mean really, who can actually focus 100% or more under this kind of pressure and scrutiny? I just gotta say, fly at your own peril but I would find alternate means!!!
More and more this will be happening wile TRUMPTWAT is in power
Flying in and out of the U S is becoming a matter of concern to the WORLD !!👇👇💙💙👇👇💙💙👇👇💙💙
It's always 'pilot error' until the investigation report is done.
After the investigation it's usually 'a series of mistakes made in lots of different areas.'
At MDW, yes. At DCA they were cleared onto the runway to take off (it seems), but didn't get moving fast enough (or maybe the AA flight was too fast). At DCA it really sounds completely normal - like slowing down when you notice that the car ahead of you isn't moving as fast as you thought it would.
This is a story about nothing. I live just south of LAX (as in right across the street). There are go arounds almost once a week (I heard them fly over my house), and it's been like that since I moved here in 2015. It's not a bug- it's a feature that makes airports safer.
That will never happen because it's not a staffing issue. In one case it was probably major pilot error. In the other it was a slow departure. In both cases the controllers did what they could.
Having enough controllers to prevent burnout would be nice though.
The problem isn’t ATC staffing. It’s too many flights on and off of essentially one runway. They have to land a plane every two minutes and launch departures in between. They depend on pilots to be super on the ball to maintain that cadence. If someone doesn’t go when they’re told to go, then 🤷♂️🛫
Gonna be super real, where are the air traffic controllers? Give them all the money and perks they want. Are they unionized? Give them a union and a 401k with full benefits. I am dead serious.
The American Airlines one not uncommon at US airports. One time I just just jogging along bayshore and saw a Virgin Atlantic B747 going around because the previous plane hadn't cleared the runway while taking off. The Chicago Midway incident could have been a disaster if not for fast pilot reaction
Not sure everyone realizes that this has been quite common over the years. But today we have yahoos that report every single one so the uninformed think it's something new.
Wow. I thought I was getting confused about the details of 1 incident. I guess my mind could not wrap itself around the fact that this could happen twice in one day. It took this article to make me realize the magnitude of the craziness going on on tarmac right now.
Maybe we should fire more faa workers? I’m sure, seeing how fed employees are treated, people are lined up to apply for air traffic controllers positions. And by people I mean white men.
A go-around due to traffic ahead not departing expeditiously happens all the time. It happened to me on an arrival to DCA two years ago. This is a minor traffic congestion issue, not a safety issue.
Yesterday’s runway incursion at Midway was a far different and more serious occurrence.
One wonders... Now I know Hollyweired is not reallity but ther have been several shows, movies and the like where hackers (like FElon Musk's crack hackr squad) Take over a plane........
(I do not THINK they can do that but.. I'm not an expert in that part of electronics)

We don’t need people to be freaking out about flying.
But trump chose to politicize the FAA/ATC, so here we are.

1 - New & unfamiliar with MDW
2 - Exhausted
3 - Impaired
I'm hoping it was 1, fearing 2 or 3. The investigation report should be interesting.
Omg!

It's a ground traffic control problem.
Which is effectively the same.
Carry on.

What would you do?

80% of us have never been counted even once as a "billionith passenger" [one leg of one trip]
and so another ponder is kerosene as a very limited distillate and 1% to 2% improvement in aircraft annually has implications?
Drill Baby Drill USA not China.

Astonishing to think the 4 year old child in the photo is toilet trained while the orange goblin cosplaying the president wears a diaper.
