Read somewhere that NASA has poured so much money into SpaceX they "can't afford" to terminate the contract even though it's chance of success defies physics.

(How accurate that assessment is, I do not know. I DO know that we should cancel ALL contracts with elon and deport him.)

Mostly right. SpaceX Falcon9 is by far the most reliable and efficient ride to orbit. There is nothing that can replace it yet.

I stress "yet" because there are a half dozen F9 competitors in the works and DOD and NASA have both intentionally incubated them to bring about a broader industry.
