His point about learned helplessness is so true, I see it all the time in the FBW discord. They've got fantastic documentation but a depressing number of users refuse to read it and would rather us teach them how to fly the A32NX/A380X, step by step, over discord text!

And "RTFM" is as old as time, but there's something possibly worse about technology meeting that standard ("thinking for you") instead of helping you reach the process.

This isn't a smug Linux user post. I know why the Linux desktop fails. It's also not really free vs proprietary software. We can't escape proprietary.

But specifically the FOSS world tends to be a lot more stubborn about keeping the machines under the control of the user.

This was dismissed because proprietary brought quality, so it was worth giving up control for the quality. But now the web services and OS's are making bad decisions and the users have already given up their opt-out control. Only option is to leave the software entirely, as bluesky is to twitter.

Changing this is going to be harder because the new generation of users (not necessarily age-correlated) do not even expect the computer be under their control. They have no memory of such a time.

Adding to this: open source is incredibly valuable to tech development but it's not equal to user curation control, especially as our computing usage moves online.

Twitter's "algorithm" is open source and it still does harm because its users can't do anything about its implementation.

What makes control is settings and customization. It's though natural to want sane defaults and low effort setup. What makes a problem is people are choosing this even after realization that the auto-curation is harmful.
