For all intents and purposes the UK does not have an independent nuclear capability; which may not have been all that important when the US was a real ally, but becomes a serious issue now that the US is effectively an ally of our enemies

I know this is a sensitive subject, and a complicated one. Whilst I disagree that having nuclear weapons is not a deterrent (do you think Russia would have invaded Ukraine if she had kept her nuclear weapons? I think not) I can agree that UK’s nuclear weapons are severely compromised.

To the point now that it is clear that it is no longer effective. Trump could lock us out of our own system and not lift a finger if Russia attacked us. But let’s be real here, there are many countries that having seen what Russia has done, are now considering a nuclear program.

Do I want nuclear weapons? No, but many countries also have come to realise that perhaps it is the only deterrent left. Of course other countries, including Russia have also considered using them, and have been prevented by pressure from China for instance.
