I make myself do things I’m afraid of, because my parents never did. God love them, they over-sheltered me

A year ago I started taking long, solo hikes. It’s a mental game to push through the fear. I’m afraid of miscalculating. I’m afraid of every strange man. I’m afraid of thirst. I’m a little afraid of bears in the Spring, due to their heightened protective instincts around their cubs.

I don’t do foolish things, and I don’t take risks. I tell people where I’m at. I take bear spray (not afraid to use it on non-bears if I’m forced to). I stick to trails. I use good equipment. I know myself—my limits and requirements.

But a little fear is good. It’s medicine. It pushes me beyond my self-imposed prison. I won’t be caged. Not by fear, not by anything.

All this to say, I hope you have a healthy relationship to your own fear. Not too much, not too little. I hope you never assume that because another person does bold things it means they’re not afraid. Because they probably are. I hope you don’t mistake your fear for weakness, b/c it’s not.
