Researchers, including scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Red Cross, have found evidence that Covid-19 was present in the U.S. in December 2019. The samples were from donors in nine states including Connecticut, California, Iowa, Michigan.

Layman here--I was surprised that study did not get more discussion. I wonder if their assays have low false positive rate. If they tested similar # of 2018 samples, I bet same result.
A Wuhan study used a more elaborate methodology that excluded false positives.

I'm re-reading the USA 2019 blood donor serology study. In fact, they did do a much better job developing their assays than I remembered, including checking on 500 much older blood donations. And they did have several lines of evidence and confirmatory steps.

Orthopoxviruses mostly hang out in rodents, large mammals are secondary hosts for most. Smallpox eventually adapted to strongly go for humans rather than rodents over time. Monkeypox was named as such because it was first discovered in a batch of lab monkeys, but they were not the endemic hosts.

I don’t really see promoting the “safe handling of wild-animal meat” - as a serious response to these outbreaks and risks

I wish there would be more support for access to safer and more sustainable food - especially delicious and nutritious plants (like soybeans)
