Nothing new.

They (and you!) were doing it in the Cold War.
Back then it was oil and gas pipelines that they were interested in.
There were numerous collisions between Royal Navy ships and Soviet ships, submarines etc.

Ark Royal collided with a Soviet frigate and two Russian sailors were killed.
