Mastodon's disaster comes down to a terrible new user onboarding experience (pick a server? what is this crazy username? what do all these feeds mean? where are trends?) and an awful adoption strategy (allowing servers to defederate, mass-moderate, etc.).

Bluesky (i.e., @atproto.com) fixes this.

The thing is it doesn’t fix all of that. There will still be federation and the good and bad that comes with that. Still curious about the onboarding process once it becomes federated. Also, curious about how the custom algorithms will impact search

All good questions, and it sounds like from @jay.bsky.team and @rose.bsky.team sharing over the weekend, there are heated discussions about how to address. But there's no doubt that both Federation and Moderation are the things that will set Bsky apart.

Without these, it's just another Sproutible.

I don’t recall Spoutible being federated? Mastodon and all of the fediverse is federated so BlueSky isn’t doing anything different on that front. It’s just how it’s setup for federation is different. But for sure with the moderation tools due to the custom algorithms

Exactly. Someone else gave a cool operating system analogy. If Twitter is Windows, Mastodon is Linux. Perhaps, then, @atproto.com should help everyone run their own copies of MacOS? Keeping things easy, but powerful, user friendly and intuitive, yet extremely customizable, with a premium on privacy.
