I think an interesting implication the movie gives is that the Thing isn't just some monster, it came here on a spaceship which means it's a civilized being, so there's a planet out there full of Things that are just like regular people.

I’ve wondered about this, especially after the short story that was up for a Hugo years back, The Things. Remember that the ship crashed, I think that wasn’t the Thing’s ship—the thing infected whomever it belonged to.

As the film states, it could be a life form that’s overtaken a thousand different worlds, or it could just be a virus or something with its own sentient functions. We just don’t know, and the film doesn’t want us to know, and man I dig that

I just love the idea of a planet of Things walking their Thing dogs, hanging out by the water cooler to talk about the game last night, just all the mundane crap we do but they're shapeshifting nightmare creatures.
