it also tends to be far more fulfilling and better quality. You’re constantly working on getting better, you’re constantly recognizing your craft, and you feel better about the work. It’s also really good to have short, manageable goals for word count for any session.

And don’t edit yourself preemptively. Just put the words to paper. Part of what you’re doing is building the habit & the muscle memory to keep the work moving. Writing requires the brainpower & imagination to sustain the characters, story, everything. It’s not just inspiration.

I don’t think his problem is in waiting for inspiration to strike—it’s more likely the stuff he’s writing is far too complex with setting, timing, and plotting. It’s not writing one novel, it’s writing 10-20, depending on the number of POVs.

And i bet he’s not thrilled with the product, so he keeps going back and tinkering, which impacts this and impacts that. Meereenese knot compounded.

I often picture him coming up with amazing ideas but in order to enact them he either has to change 10+ previous chapters to make it work, or change 10+ future chapters because of how it will affect other things.

I also assume this becomes more and more complicated as characters that were all spread apart are starting to converge. Brienne's entire riverlands trek happened with no effect on any other POVs. Until the letter to Jaime. Now her actions effect his.

I used to try and have periods of time set for writing but I couldn't focus so now I've taken to making my writing time and video game time the same where every time I reach some arbitrarily chosen milestone I can't continue until I've written at least one sentence.
