I found these chonky 🍄‍🟫s on yesterday's lunch walk. Fall/late oyster, Panellus serotinus. Very easy to ID, but due to their apparent blandness they aren't highly sought after. I liked them mixed in a stir-fry with chanterelles, and they would be good in soups, melded with other flavors. #fungifriends - ThreadSky

Would you know anything about the classification/naming of these? I've been calling these Sarcomyxa serotina, and after seeing your post and doing a little Googling I'm a little confused about the preferred or correct name.

I recently got a new portable mushroom ID book that I'm really liking. It indicates that the species is referred to by both names. So your confusion is 100% understandable. I don't know which is preferred, or what the background is on why they have both names but I think both may be acceptable.

There's a different species in Japan, Sarcomyxa edulis, that is cultivated (mukitake.) Supposedly they taste better than S. serotina. If there wasn't a risk of introducing non-native fungi, I'd be interested in getting some culture to try them - but I'm wary about introducing non-natives

Thanks for the great info! I'd love to try that species, if one could ensure they wouldn't escape to the wild here. I'd feel terrible if they displaced the natives, that we then discovered were an important niche species.

There's already species that have escaped cultivation - Pleurotus citrinopileatus is probably the BIGGEST problem, especially where I am in the east, though shiitake (Lentinula edodes) have also escaped - hopefully they're not displacing rare, native species of Lentinula.
