I've heard the same from many friends who were in the Warsaw Pact in the cold war. Many also listened to CBC on short wave, particularly the main news "The World at Six" & also "As it Happens" (which remains one of the best current affairs interview shows in the world).

We must save CBC from PP.

When I was a little kid in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq war, we listened to VoA and BBC World Service (both in Persian) on my grandpa's short wave radio. There was no other source of outside information.

In my 40 years of living in Europe and Asia and travelling everywhere else, countless times I’ve heard how important, if not how critical, are both the VOA/RFE and BBC. The soft power of both is beyond calculation.
