- eliminates need for supplemental materials which are often confusing
- does not create artificial incentive to write confusing terse narratives

- Will increase the reviewer burden (but market effects will likely balance that)
- Page limits encourages good writing discipline

Oh no .... The first rounds of ICLR in 2013+ had no page limits (and the submission site was .... arxiv!). At some point I reviewed a 47 page paper which looked like an intern report "we did this, then that, and here is a table, and some python code, and then this didn't work so we did this ..."

But what was the real challenge --> did the market impact of submitting a ridiculously too long paper not have time to mature. I think the market is a powerful beast.

I don't think that this is the relevant question. For me the main point is that the burden should be on the authors to write the paper as clearly as possible in the shortest way possible, and not on the reviewers to sift through a large amount of useless text.

Inevitably leads to hard/impossible to understand/reproduce terse text. This was the impetus of me making the post.

I mean, eg, let's take a paper / idea everyone clearly thinks is impactful. Transformers... But, have you, umm, read the Attention is all you need paper? Impossible to understand.

Do you think ATTENTION IS ALL YOU NEED is near a local maximum for description quality:lines allowed? How much would the allowance need to increase for the science communication to improve?

Imho there's no clear answer, but the other extreme, like Shinichi Mochizuki's unchecked works, has downsides

Oh, it's an example IMO that would have benefited from more space to write more description. That's all I meant.
