I got in the habit of making endless notes, even examples of some frequencies of recoded variables. Or else I had no hope of remembering what I had done (even after a few weeks🧐😱). This was in SPSS mind you, many years ago.

I should add, these notes were "commented" within the syntax itself. Presumably one can also do this in STATA, R and so on.
