It needs to be a part of the solution, not the entirety of it though.
Plastics leach into food & drinks from containers, so limiting that use would cut a bunch of related issues.

Passengers take something to drink to airport. Are asked to dump it at security control, then 100 metres later rebuy an EXPENSIVE bottle of drink to keep them hydrated before + after departure gate

I feel that I am a very lucky man!
I recon I have picked up about three thousand FULL carrier bags of plastic in the last 6 years.
Btw, I recommend you vote in the future EU elections so you dont have to complain about not voting.
We as consumers need to be an active part of the solution. Beyond bags, where possible, choosing products made & packed sustainably.
