Closed captions are in English. English=/=ASL. ASL interpreters are exactly that: interpreters. Like the simultaneous interpreters at the UN. They translate. Their expertise is amazing.

I disagree only inasmuch as this is not mocking. It's attack; it's an attempt at erasure. Yes, it can be seen as existing on the same path as that incident, but it's far more dangerous than mocking.

Sign languages exist in more than just English. I had someone teach me what she said were words in Portuguese sign language. This is wholescale disability attack, period. I know sign language, not to interpreter level, but I do, and this is just evil.

even more than that, different English speaking countries have completely different sign languages! American sign language is more similar to French sign language than it is to British sign, due to the history of how sign language spreads through Deaf schools

Absolutely. I'm now living where the predominant sign language is Auslan, which developed as an offshoot of BSL and Irish Sign Language.

If you're interested in a really cool piece of history sign language, look up Nicaraguan sign language. The only language that we've been able to watch form in real time in recent history, completely separate from any other existing language.

I am as well. I have used Basque as a character language in one of my roleplaying games because it's not known to be connected to any existing languages and is believed to be a remnant of a language that no longer exists.

They can go fuck themselves. My campus has a large Deaf population and we embrace it! Sign language is a legitimate language.

Shout out to ASL interpreters for making events and education accessible, including the ones in my calc class and at a cosplay chess show I went to.
