and i don't just mean the M*rios or S*nics or other big IPs that corporate lawyers get mad about! there are so many games that are basically abandonware, or stuck in such an impossibly complex rights labyrinth that no one is ever going to rerelease them, or give a shit about people downloading them

go check out Isolated Warrior, or Cocoron, or even some of the IPs of yesteryear that have fallen dormant. did you know Bucky O'Hare for the NES was one of the last games the Treasure guys made while they were at Konami, and is kinda like an 8-bit Gunstar Heroes?

and for God's sake branch out from the big consoles! this is something i clearly need to do more often myself lmao. check out some DOS games, or the Amiga, or any one of the weird-ass early arcade games that failed to catch on (@lordbbh.bsky.social covers these every Monday on his Twitch channel)!

and if classic gaming's not your jam, there's a nearly bottomless well of indie games that covers every genre under the sun. a lot of indie devs and artists are really hurting right now, and if you can afford it, i'd suggest tossing a few bucks their way instead of propping up the AAA slop machine

I think it's also good to mention mods and rom hacks and such for even further replayability of older titles. some can bring anywhere from slightly newer to wildly newer experiences to some games, especially nowadays, on an almost endless amount.

I got a Miyoo Mini Plus recently and I honestly can't put the thing down half the time. Instead of browsing my phone I play a random retro game before bed; it's awesome
