This is the story of a lonely guy missing someone. He is drinking wine, staring at the moon, wishing he had drugs. Then, like astronaut songs of old he imagines himself adrift in space, marooned, stranded. Him and the moon orbiting earth without any way to touch down. Ultimate cold loneliness.

It is possible to think of this chorus now as a man planning to break free tonight. There is the nonsensical, moon is drugs and as if the sea of tranquility has water- the type of thing a drug-addled mind might imagine. But the music isn’t in tune with that reality so I don’t think its that dark

Now he thinks remembers earth and moon are sisters wishing they could be reunited. The eternity of traveling and seeing each other but out of touch. It’s a sad dance. Yet, perhaps, it calms the lonely man to think how universal it is. How natural it is to feel lonely. He feels in harmony.

I like to think in this chorus that the man is just a lonely, whimsical man, a romantic… beginning to feel relaxed and silly. He realizes imaging his loneliness is like these other legendary loneliness is a way of distancing from his own pain. He’s breathing, surrendering to the night. Relaxing.

He expresses the pain, the ache, the emptiness as great and his. He feels it. Then he feels hope. The way to get it right is to keep trying even if you get it wrong. Sitting here in the dark, alone, drinking wine, looking at the moon, he has found solace in a companion who understands. Tranquil.

The emotion evoked in me at this last chorus is dancing with the moon shining on you, thinking the moon itself is a sort of drug, joyous, happy. Maybe thinking of an afterlife free of all pain and heartache which makes today worth it. Maybe thinking he will have that life here someday. Celebrating
